James Hardie Fence Installation: The Orlando Owner’s Guide
James Hardie fence installation in Orlando typically runs $3,500 – $9,000 for a standard residential project, and in most cases we can have your new fence scheduled within one to two weeks of the written estimate. That range covers the full scope: removing the old fence, setting posts in concrete, installing James Hardie fiber cement panels and trim, and hauling away debris. Most homeowners discover they need this work after a hard summer storm, when a panel cracks at the nail line or the bottom edge starts swelling from ground contact. We are an independent Orlando contractor, not affiliated with James Hardie, but we install their siding and fence products regularly and stand behind every job with our 365-Day Done Right Promise.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

James Hardie makes fiber cement siding and trim products that Orlando homeowners frequently adapt for fence panels, and the compatibility comes down to the product line, not the fence style. The most common products we install are HardiePlank lap siding (5/16″ thick, available in 4×8 and 4×10 sheets or 12′ planks) and HardiePanel vertical siding (also 5/16″ thick), which gets used for privacy screens and modern board-on-batten fence designs. If you’re replacing a failed panel, check the back of the board or the packaging for the product code, or measure the thickness. A true James Hardie panel is 5/16″ nominal; some big-box fiber cement alternatives run thinner and will not match the reveal or shadow line of your existing fence.
On the OEM-vs-aftermarket question: for fence panels specifically, aftermarket fiber cement from other manufacturers exists, but we do not recommend mixing brands on the same fence run. The expansion rates and moisture absorption differ slightly, and in Orlando’s humidity you will see joints open up or panels warp out of plane within a season. James Hardie also carries a 30-year limited product warranty on most siding products when installed to spec, and using matched materials keeps that intact. We stock HardiePlank and HardiePanel on our trucks for most Orlando fence calls, along with HardieTrim boards for corners and top caps. If you’re matching an existing color, we can factory-match through James Hardie’s ColorPlus palette or prime and paint on site.

Signs Your James Hardie Fence Installation Is Failing
- Cracking at the nail or screw line. This is the number one failure we see in Orlando. Fiber cement expands and contracts with humidity swings, and if the original installer fastened too close to the panel edge or over-drove the fasteners, the board cracks along that stress line.
- Swelling or delamination at the bottom edge. James Hardie products need clearance from soil. If a previous contractor set the panels in contact with the ground, wicking moisture causes the bottom 2 – 4 inches to swell, flake, or separate.
- Mold or mildew staining that doesn’t wash off. Orlando’s wet season is relentless, and a fence without proper airflow or with sprinkler overspray will grow staining that penetrates the fiber cement surface. If it’s blooming through the paint, the moisture is getting behind the panel.
- Loose or popping fasteners. When a panel starts moving more than it should, fasteners back out and leave visible gaps or rust streaks. This usually means the post or rail structure behind the panel is shifting.
- Sagging fence line between posts. If the panel span was too long for the product, the board will bow or sag between posts. James Hardie panels on a fence need post spacing of no more than 6 feet on center to stay flat.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A full James Hardie fence installation in Orlando runs $3,500 – $9,000, with most backyard privacy fences in the $4,500 – $6,500 range. The spread comes down to three things: linear footage (obviously), post condition (reusing existing posts versus setting new ones in concrete), and whether you’re replacing the whole fence or just failed sections. Small repairs, like swapping out three or four damaged panels, usually land between $800 and $2,500. Every estimate we write is a fixed number, not a range, and it includes removal and disposal of the old material, all fasteners and hardware, the James Hardie product, labor, and our written 365-Day Done Right Promise. If a panel fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge, and we’ll put that in writing before any work starts. Call (850) 427-6454 and we’ll give you the number first, then pick up the tool.
DIY or Call Us?
Fiber cement is not a high-tension or electrical hazard the way a garage door spring is, so the honest answer is that some of this you can check yourself. You can confirm whether your panels have ground clearance, whether the fasteners are tight, and whether sprinkler heads are spraying directly on the fence face. The part where DIY goes wrong is structural: James Hardie panels need specific fastener spacing, edge clearance, and flashing detail over horizontal seams, and once a panel is cut, the cut edge has to be properly sealed or it will absorb water in Orlando’s climate. Cutting fiber cement also produces silica dust, which is not something you want to inhale without proper respiratory protection. Trevor Nash and our crew have been working with James Hardie products in Orlando for years, and we set panels to the manufacturer’s spec so the warranty holds. If you’d rather have it done once and guaranteed, call (850) 427-6454.
FAQs

A properly installed James Hardie fence in Orlando will last 25 – 30 years before the panels themselves need replacing, assuming the posts and structure beneath them are sound. The panels can fail sooner if they touch the ground, sit too close to sprinklers, or were fastened incorrectly. The posts, which are usually pressure-treated wood, typically need attention around the 15 – 20 year mark in Central Florida soil and humidity. If your posts are still solid, we can swap just the fiber cement panels, which cuts the job down from a full-fence project to a one-day repair in many cases. Call (850) 427-6454 for an exact quote on your fence’s condition.
A hairline crack can sometimes be sealed and painted, but a full crack through the board means the panel should be replaced, not patched. Fiber cement doesn’t flex back together the way wood can glue up; once the integrity of the panel is compromised, Orlando’s humidity will keep working at the crack until it splits through. We’ll always tell you honestly if a repair will hold or if we should swap the panel. Repairs typically start around $300; a full panel replacement depends on how many panels have failed. Estimates are free – call (850) 427-6454.
Most Orlando fence installations take one to two days on site for a standard backyard, and we give you a defined arrival window before we show up. If the work involves removing an old fence, setting new posts in concrete, and installing new James Hardie panels, plan for two days because the post concrete needs to cure before we hang panels on it. Small section repairs are often done the same visit. Every job gets a written schedule and a written price before we start, so day one is the day you know the whole picture.
We keep HardiePlank and HardiePanel in stock on our trucks for most Orlando fence calls, along with the trim, flashing, and fasteners that the installation requires. If your project uses a specific ColorPlus color, we order that from James Hardie directly and it usually arrives within a week. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone products on remodeling projects, so the standard is the same across the board: name-brand materials that carry their own warranties alongside ours.
If your James Hardie fence is showing cracks, swelling, or loose panels, don’t wait for the next Orlando storm to finish the job. Call (850) 427-6454 and we’ll send a background-checked, uniformed technician to look at it, write you a fixed price in plain numbers, and stand behind the work in writing.
